Development of Criteria for New Product Groups

Proposals for the preparation of new product or service criteria can be suggested by any person or organisation. The proposals should contain the following elements:

a) If the proposal is submitted by a person or by civil organisations, it should contain written documentation on the following:

  • the function of the product or service;
  • the proposed product’s environmental advantages compared to other products or services with similar function, which would make the given product suitable for the eco-label award.

b) If the proposal is submitted by producers, retailers, trade unions or by government organisations, it should contain written documentation on the followings:

  • the function of the product or service;
  • the proposed product’s environmental performance compared to other products or services with similar function, which would make the given product suitable for the eco-label award;
  • information on raw-material and energy consumption relating to the production of the given product;
  • information on energy consumption and environmental impacts relating to the use of the given product;
  • environmental information relating to the disposal of the product.

Environmental impacts to be assessed are: environmental safety, energy consumption, harmful emissions into the environment, amount of generated waste, impacts of the ecosystem, protection of the ozone layer, and the protection of air, water and soil.

Proposals are submitted to the Evaluating and Assessing Committee by the Hungarian Eco-labelling Organisation.

If the Evaluating and Assessing Committee agrees the Hungarian Eco-labelling Organisation prepares an evaluation based draft criteria, which is– with the approval of the Minister – submitted to the Evaluating and Assessing Committee for approval. The new criteria are announced after the approval of the Committee.
